Star Wars: Clone Wars Season One Widevision Artist Sketch Cards - Step by Step

Here's a look at my technique process of creating my sketch card art for Topps' Star Wars: Clone Wars Season One Widevision Artist Sketch Cards from the blank card to the final illustration.

Have a look below -

This is what the blank widevision sketch cards look like that I received from Topps for this project.
CW Blank Card

For the first step I drew a border in ink for each card and then filled the squares of half my cards with a 30% cool grey and 30% warm grey marker base tone (about 50 of each).
CW Step One

In the second step you can see I've begun the pencil art process of drawing the characters.
CW Step Two

For the third step I've added a "halo" around each character with a 40% grey marker tone and I fill in the lightsabers with white Prismacolor pencil on every card where needed.
CW Step Three

In this step I've begun inking the pencil art with microns, tech pens, sharpies, etc.
CW Step Four

For the next part of the process I begin rendering the artwork with more markers (from 30% - 70% grey tones).
CW Step Five

Finally, I finish rendering the artwork with more white Prismacolor pencil adding in highlights and details and then going back into the inked line with my tech pens to tighten up the line work again.
CW Step Six

The entire technique process for my 125 cards took just over a month to complete. The back of each card is then hand signed, packaged up and shipped back to the publisher for release of the product in stores.

Topps's Star Wars: Clone Wars Season One Widevision Trading Cards are shipping this November so feel free to purchase a pack or a box and hopefully you'll come across one of my exclusive hand-drawn artist sketch cards for your collection.

For more information be sure to check out the official website for this new series from Topps right here. I hope you enjoyed this look at the process of creating my sketch card art for this new Star Wars set, feel free to view all of my completed cards in my new Star Wars: Clone Wars Season One art gallery.

I'll see you next time for another Comics 101 feature.
