Star Wars Insider #66 - The Art of Shaak Ti -- Week Four: Color Steps Part Three
I'm currently busy this winter illustrating new projects for Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and my new comic book series for IDW Publishing, Spike Vs. Dracula. You can view my cover artwork for the first issue right here and be sure to check out my News section for more info. New articles, reviews and tutorials for Comics 101 will return in 2006 so enjoy this look back at one of my favorite features. Happy Holidays!
In the following examples I complete the shading on Palaptine and then begin the same Watercolor brush technique on the Jedi Plo Koon and Mace Windu in the Painter program. Using reference photos for the characters allows me to match their skin tones and create more believable looking rendering even when using a more simplified graphic coloring technique.

Reference is an important tool, like a pencil, a computer or an art program and is key to making any illustration successful, especially when dealing with Star Wars likeness work. For me and my style, in order for my artwork to have the Star Wars 'essence' that makes me (and Lucasfilm) happy I strive to match the look and feel of all the details, big or small. So it really does pay to take the time to make sure you have the right materials on hand whether you're illustrating a cityscape, an animal or a well known, recognizable character.

Once the character's shadows are blocked in the next step is for me to open this artwork back in Photoshop and begin adding the highlights to them with the Dodge tool. Next week we'll wrap up the final steps of the artwork and take a look at the completed illustration.
