Art tips and techniques, reviews and interviews from my studio. Archived here and at World Famous Comics. Comics 101 for 09/16/2004 Star Wars Gamer #6 - Battle Droids! Week 6: Digital Painting over Pencils Part Four For the last step in this artwork, I finish rendering Vinto and the battle droid being diced by Mynnic's blade. I'm going in with my 'Darken' airbrush in Photoshop adding the contrast and values to these two characters. Then I go back in with my 'Dodge' tool and add the highlights, rounding out the forms (Ex.M). With a few more touch ups and tweaks we end up with our completed artwork (Ex.N). It's usually good to get a good night's sleep on the piece before you turn it in to the publisher. This way, you can take a look at it the next day with a fresh pair of eyes and catch any mistakes you may have missed the night before. And show the piece to a friend or two, especially if they're another artist, to get their opinion. I hope you enjoyed this past month's Comics 101 feature. Join me next time for what will probably be a behind the scenes look at most likely another piece of Star Wars art (I have lots of that to talk about for some reason). I have a really cool feature coming up for the month of October though so stay tuned! Plus, in the next couple of months we'll be looking at a comprehensive, detailed look at one of my newest paintings (a collaboration with artist Jeff Carlisle) celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Star Wars! See ya next time! -Joe Recent Columns:
