Art tips and techniques, reviews and interviews from my studio. Archived here and at World Famous Comics. Comics 101 for 02/13/2003 Star Wars Gamer #9 - Wraith Squadron: The Art of Infiltration -- Week Four: The Color Final Part Two Now that I've blocked in the foreground character's color tones and worked blocking in the tones and gradients in the background afterwards, I decide to continue to render the Imperial ships with shadows and highlights. With the Darken Airbrush I'm able to render over my base color and still keep my darker, colored linework intact. By selecting the established color with the Eyedropper tool and then selecting darker, grey values of that tone in my color picker window, I lay in my shadows to add some simple tonal changes and color variation where needed. I'm keeping my background rendering subdued since I want the emphasis of color and value contrast to be on the foreground characters where the focus of the illustration should be. Along with using the Darken Airbrush, I use my Dodge tool at a minimal opacity to create some subtle highlights in my background objects. I keep the opacity for this tool low since I don't want my highlights to look too intense or washed out and can keep the brights subdued like the rest of my background rendering. I'm also adding details of stars in the sky and blinking lights on the radar dish with the Airbrush tool to complete my background rendering. Then after completing the detailing and rendering of the background I move back up to the foreground of the image and adjust the coloring on the bunker, giving it a gradient of dark to light from top to bottom to make it feel more three dimensional than the flat color I had already established it with. Next week we'll look at the completed illustration and the final steps of the color process by using Painter along with Photoshop. -Joe Recent Columns:
