Journal of the Whills #24 Interview - Part Two

Click here for Part One of this interview.

JotW: Is there something, you personally would have done differently

concerning the (Star Wars) movies?

Joe: There's not really anything I would do to change these movies. I love these films. Though these movies are not always perfect across the board in terms of stellar acting or superior dialogue, they do things far greater than most movies could ever hope to accomplish. Star Wars movies touch people's hearts and spark their imaginations in a positive way. They deal with universal themes that speak to people on an epic scale.

This usually leads people to claiming these stories as part of their personality and being overly obsessive and hyper-critical like fans were with Episode One. These are just movies, albeit some of the best movies ever made I think, but for better or for worse these are George Lucas' stories and it's his vision. It's his stories that he wants to share with us. He's not forcing us to worship them or even like them the way we do.

And I think it's really unfair that certain people become so critical of his work they feel they must go out and plagarize it with all the 'Phantom Edits' that happened and got so much attention. I think that's so ridiculous. I'm an artist with my own vision. I wouldn't be pleased with anyone taking my hard work and reworking my drawings or paintings until it suited the needs of a small faction of obsessed fans. Though I do understand with something as big as Star Wars it really doesn't belong to one particular set of people or even one person anymore like Lucas unfortunately. Star Wars has a life of its own. The stories are so worldy and accessible that fans will embrace them and try to connect with them however they will.

JotW: What expectations do you have concerning the upcoming Episodes II and III?

Joe: My expectations are usually focused on the character development. I look forward to seeing what happens to the main characters in their personal histories and motivations that lead them to the events of the classic trilogy. I'm fascinated to see the events play out that push Anakin to the Dark Side and become the ultimate villain of all time.

As long as George keeps coming up with great lightsaber fights, space battles and action scenes that further these dramatic conflicts of the good and evil characters my expectations will be satisfied. I really don't have a doubt that these movies will get even better with each episode.

JotW: What are your next Star Wars projects?

Joe: I'm working on a Star Wars project with Lucasfilm that I'm not at liberty to discuss right now since it won't debut until this summer. I'm also working currently on projects for Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Gamer magazine and the Role-Playing Game.

JotW: How do you get such orders?

Joe: Once I establish myself with a company as a freelance artist, usually I'm contacted for assignments by the art director or editor of the project when they have something they want me to illustrate. Sometimes, if it's a specific writer who wants to work with me and vice versa, we approach the publisher or company as a team for a project we may want to do and try to get the ball rolling that way.

JotW: What Star Wars project would you like to put into action?

Joe: Right now I'm in the process of getting my first Star Wars writing published for Star Wars Gamer magazine. I just turned in my final draft for a Star Wars article I written and illustrated so I'm hoping that goes through all the channels and becomes published in an upcoming issue soon.

A dream project for me would be to eventually illustrate Star Wars comic book art for Dark Horse Comics. I've always wanted to do artwork for them since comic books are and always will be my first love. My background in illustration began with being published as a comic book artist and Star Wars comics were what inspired me to be an artist as a kid in the first place. I'd love to come full circle and receive a Star Wars assignment from Dark Horse since I would give them the absolute best Star Wars art possible.

JotW: What are you doing in your spare time?

Joe: My spare time is usually spent teaching art courses down at campus three days a week. I teach Comic Book illustration, Introduction to Illustration and Electronic Illustration classes at an art college here in Ohio. So I guess it seems like I'm always working. Though it doesn't really feel like work at all when I'm drawing or painting since it's what I love to do especially when I'm doing Star Wars art.

Any other free time I have I use to try to get out once in awhile shopping for Star Wars toys or cds and dvds and playing video games. Or I'll spend some free time updating and tweaking my official website or working on personal art projects. I also like to go the movies often since film is a strong influence in my work, especially my comic book art.

JotW: Where can we see more of your work?

Joe: Just about everything I illustrate including all my Star Wars art, can be seen at my official website, www.JoeCorroney.com, which is updated often. TheForce.net website has a great gallery of my published and unpublished Star Wars art as well which folks can check out. They've been really supportive and helpful in getting me exposure for my Star Wars art over the past few years. There are a few other Star Wars fan sites out there which display my art as well like www.EchoStation.com.

I've written and illustrated for the first eight issues of 'Sketch' magazine and plan to write for some more in the future. You can order Sketch through www.BlueLinePro.com. I'm also working on a new comic book coming out soon called 'Blood and Rose: Time Lords' which you can get a preview of at my website or the Blue Line Pro website. You can usually find my work in Star Wars Gamer magazine and hopefully in more Star Wars Role-Playing Game books soon.

JotW: Thank you very much for the interview and good luck for your future.

Joe: Thanks for letting me be a part of your magazine!

Journal of the Whills #24 is now available to order from my Stuff to Buy page. For more information about this magazine check out Star Wars.com or the Official German Star Wars Fan-Club website.
