Art tips and techniques, reviews and interviews from my studio. Archived here and at World Famous Comics. Comics 101 for 08/23/2001 Chewbacca Memorial Painting by Joe Corroney Week Four Painting with acrylics isn't like dusting crops, boy! In these next series of steps, I'll take you through the final process of completing the painting. I return to my brushes and begin adding more and more detail into the overall painting. I'm rendering the main characters with more colors and thicker paint now. But I'm also switching back and forth between using the acrylics with my color pencils as I complete the rendering on the Han and Leia characters (Example F). By simultaneously using the color pencils after the washes of paint quickly dries, I'm adding important details and still keeping the integrity of the drawing established. If used correctly, color pencils can blend well with the paint and be used for highlights of color and detail quickly. Since I've been illustrating with a pencil before I can remember, as I do in my comic illustration work, I find it very comfortable in working with the color pencils in my painting. I'm still thinking of my painting as equally as important as a drawing at this point and keeping the progression of both paint and color pencil equally established. Example F I go in heavily with color pencils now to establish the texture of the Wookiee's fur. Even after this layering of color, I choose to go in again with more paint and even more color pencils to complete the rendering on Chewie and his bowcaster (Example G). I also use some final color pencil on Leia, Han, and his blaster to tighten up the last bit of detailing on the characters. Example G See ya next Thursday as we wrap up the steps and complete the painting by finishing the rendering on Boba Fett and the Millenium Falcon. -Joe Recent Columns:
