Art tips and techniques, reviews and interviews from my studio. Archived here and at World Famous Comics. Comics 101 for 07/05/2001 Week 2: Parts Unknown-The Pin-up! Fresh Tendrils and a Splice of Spacejam The next step in the creation process was for me to take my initial palm-sized concept sketches and begin drawing them out to full size on Blue Line bristol board. In some cases, as I did with his project, I actually enlarge the small, rough thumbnail sketch on a xerox machine until it fits the 11x17 inch board or 10x15inch frame of reference. I then use my lightbox (a good one might set you back between a hundred and two-hundred bucks) to transfer the enlarged xerox sketch to my fresh sheet of bristol. I trace over some of the lines I want to keep and begin cleaning up the composition more in general. I do this by adding more detail and making my drawing stronger while working on the lightbox. In this new layer of penciling, working on the lightbox allows me to keep the layout of the composition consistent working from an initially small scale to a much larger scale. As shown in Example C, I begin the process of 'fleshing in' the drawing by adding more form to the figures and building up more detail. Though initially, I was partial to this composition, at this point I felt I was straying too far from the B-movie poster design I originally envisioned. Example C Switching gears, I moved onto my second design and using the same techinque with my lightbox, I began reworking the concept larger on my Blue Line bristol board. Looking at Example D, I kept this larger sketch abit looser than ex. C because I was still trying to figure out the positioning of type and of the characters. In Example E, I finally started roughing in more of the drawing in regards to the characters and other details. I became much more conifdent about this rough sketch and finally felt I had my B-movie poster concept nailed down. Example D Next week, we'll finish up the drawing by making it tighter and completing the line art. -Joe Recent Columns:
